Estate agent insights into West Wickham

Bromley and Croydon (with all they have to offer) are also within easy reach. West Wickham is celebrated for its great sense of community, and has an attractive and well-served high street. It's also justifiably renowned for having some of the most highly-regarded schools in the borough. It is also considered that the houses here are, generally speaking, spacious with generously-sized gardens.

Lovers of green spaces are spoilt for choice here as the area is bordered by rolling countryside, including the 26 acres of West Wickham Common, with its many routes to some fantastic views in both Kent and Surrey.

Out and about in West Wickham

The high street is a welcoming mixture of both independent shops and some of the more familiar chains. There is no shortage of pubs (The Swan and The Wheatsheaf, to name but two) and cafés and the restaurants cater for a wide variety of tastes including Spanish, Italian, Indian and Chinese. Of particular interest are some of the very long-standing businesses to be found here. Home to many electrical appliances, TVs and lightbulbs is Croft Radio, which has been trading since 1946 and believes very much in old-fashioned service values. Larratts Butchers, established in 1984, offers a personalised service with all meat hand-prepared on the premises. Motorists can find vehicles and repair services at Phillip Reigate Auto Services and, while you're waiting, any vinyl-lovers can always pop over to Rollin Records.

Sporty types can find yoga at Ah! Yoga and Karma Studios, whilst West Wickham Leisure Centre offers everything from swimming, a full fitness suite and a pump room to Zumba and group cycling. If you are feeling a little adventurous, then West Wickham Self Defence speaks for itself!

The history of West Wickham

West Wickham's history dates back to before 1066 and it is noted in 1086's Domesday Book as having about 110 inhabitants. Circa 1410, this had risen to 280, but was decimated to about 100 again during the Black Death. West Wickham Manor was bought in 1469 by Henry Heydon, who then rebuilt the parish church and the manor house. It was sold again to John Lennard (in 1580), and his family and subsequent connections lived there for almost 350 years.

By the early 1800s, with its population recorded as 436, some nobility and gentry had made the village a favoured destination. By the 20s and 30s some large properties were redeveloped as rows of houses and the High Street was widened.

By 1921, the population was at around 1,300, growing to approximately 20,000 by the beginning of WW2. After the war, the town became a major shopping centre and, for the first time, started to provide office space! West Wickham Swimming Baths opened in 1967, with the Police Office coming to the High Street in 1974.
